What is Chiropractic?
Did you know that chiropractic care is the third largest health profession in the world? Chiropractic care is a natural form of health care that involves treating patients without the use of drugs or medicine. It focuses primarily on the 24 bones of the spine (vertebrae). However, what many people don’t realise is that Chiropractic can be used to treat any joint in the body.
When the spine experiences negative change, it can have consequences on the surrounding muscles, joints, ligaments, discs, and nerves. This dysfunction can lead to nerve irritation, affecting the body’s ability to function at full potential, and may or may not express itself as pain. This is where chiropractic care can help.
Where spinal dysfunction is detected Chiropractic care can restore lost function and assist the body to recover from a range of conditions, including:
Chiropractic works by helping to restore the best possible function to the joints and muscles, which in turn enables the body to restore balance, naturally. The effect differs from patient to patient and results can range from minor improvements to extraordinary results.
What happens in the first appointment?
What to expect during your chiropractic examination
When you visit Harbour Family Chiropractic, your chiropractor will discuss your health-related problems, concerns, and potential treatment options. After your consultation, we perform a complete chiropractic examination to test your reflexes and flexibility. Other standard neurological, orthopaedic, postural, and physical tests are also performed.
Depending on your condition, we may take x-rays to help develop the most effective treatment plan for you. This may also alert us to any serious spinal conditions.
After reviewing your health history, goals, and examining your spine and x-rays, we will discuss treatment recommendations and notify you if your condition requires care from other providers, such as medical doctors and physiotherapists.
Our chiropractic treatments may include spinal adjustments, physical therapy, and/or soft tissue therapy.

What is an adjustment?
An adjustment is a highly skilled and precise movement usually applied by hand to a joint of the body. Adjustment loosens the joint to restore proper movement and optimise function. When a joint is adjusted, you may or may not hear a “popping” sound; this is not bone on bone but rather a tissue release. The same sound can actually be created in the release of chronic muscle adhesions.
When should I have an adjustment?
We believe that everyone should have a spinal check. Many problems can go on undetected for years until the body can no longer adapt and pain presents. For most people, back pain is the only time they are aware something is wrong. Unfortunately, this can keep them away from work, school, or even their day-to-day activities. If you’ve come to the point where pain causes interruptions and restrictions in the activities of your daily life then you should consider seeing a chiropractor.

Is chiropractic safe?
Chiropractic is widely recognised as one of the safest, drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of headache, and neck and back pain. It has an excellent safety record. Although no health treatment is completely free of risk, Chiropractors are trained to pick up early signs of those who may be at risk of an adverse reaction. Even common over-the-counter medicines carry a risk.
Do I need a referral?
No. Chiropractic patients do not need a referral (unless you are claiming for Veterans’ Affairs).
Does chiropractic care require X-Rays?
X-rays can play an important role in diagnosis and are taken when a need has been determined after taking a patient case history and conducting a physical examination.
